The resort, designed to resemble a traditional Chinese water village, was created by Sylvia Chiang Design LLC, based in San Francisco, with Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG) responsible for the overall aesthetic of the Dong Qian Lake project. Opened in 2012, the 226-room luxury resort, featuring free-standing villas, blends modern and classical Chinese architectural elements, offering a serene getaway just two and a half hours from Shanghai.

Sylvia Chiang’s interiors incorporate minimalist elegance with Chinese cultural motifs, using natural materials like wood and stone to create a timeless, sophisticated ambiance that reflects the region’s heritage while catering to modern luxury travelers. The resort’s wellness offerings include the Yue Hu Spa with 12 private treatment rooms, blending Chinese and Western therapies, a Fitness Pavilion with a heated indoor pool, a 26-meter outdoor infinity pool, gym, steam rooms, saunas, and whirlpool baths. Dining options include the Seafood House, a signature restaurant with 11 private pavilion-style dining rooms, the Dining Room for all-day Western and Chinese cuisine, and the Tea House, set in a restored Qing Dynasty Memorial Hall, serving savory Chinese and Western items. The Red Bar offers cocktails and temple-inspired cuisine. Banquet facilities include The Ballroom (pillar-less, accommodating 400 guests), The Salon, and The Pavilion for intimate events, with a total of 1,312 sqm of event space.
