Located on a secluded private island in the Bacuit Archipelago of El Nido, the remarkable Lagen Island Resort is nestled between dramatic limestone cliffs, lush tropical rainforest, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Set across approximately six hectares on the northwestern coast of Palawan, the resort occupies one of the most ecologically rich environments in the Philippines, offering guests an immersive experience within a protected marine and wildlife sanctuary. Its strategic location provides direct access to hidden lagoons, coral reefs, diving sites, and the extraordinary natural landscapes that have made El Nido a globally celebrated destination for eco-tourism and luxury island travel.
The resort’s recent transformation was designed by WATG in collaboration with Wimberly Interiors, while development and ownership are led by Ayala Land Hospitality, one of the Philippines’ leading luxury hospitality groups. The renovation repositions Lagen Island as a contemporary eco-sanctuary while preserving its long-standing identity as a nature-focused retreat. WATG’s multidisciplinary approach combined architecture, interior design, sustainability consulting, and hospitality strategy to create a resort experience deeply rooted in place, culture, and environmental stewardship.
The central design philosophy is based on a “preservation-first” and regenerative tourism approach, where architecture acts as an extension of the island’s ecosystem rather than an intervention imposed upon it. Instead of replacing the original resort, the design team preserved most of the existing structures, minimizing demolition and environmental impact while protecting the island’s biodiversity. Inspired by indigenous Filipino craftsmanship, the design narrative incorporates traditional weaving patterns, tribal carving motifs, locally sourced materials, and references to the iconic Paraw sailing boat. The project embraces the duality of the island’s landscape—“The Sea” and “The Forest”—which became the conceptual framework for the Water Villas and Forest Suites. Throughout the resort, architecture is carefully opened toward the surrounding scenery, strengthening visual and emotional connections with the ocean, rainforest, and limestone formations.
The facilities at Lagen Island Resort are designed to blend luxury hospitality with environmental sensitivity. The resort features 42 accommodations, including overwater Water Villas and secluded Forest Rooms and Suites immersed within tropical vegetation. Public amenities include a waterfront Arrival Hall and Clubhouse, a signature Sunset Bar positioned along the beachfront, a wellness Spa integrated into the rainforest, a Dive Center for marine exploration, a Chapel overlooking the island landscape, and various dining venues. The Water Villas feature expanded ocean-facing lounges, panoramic views, and interiors inspired by traditional Filipino architecture, while the Forest Suites are nestled among ancient trees and rock formations, offering a more intimate connection with nature. Recreational offerings include snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, island-hopping excursions, wildlife observation, forest walks, and wellness experiences that celebrate the surrounding environment. Sustainability initiatives include material reuse, conservation of existing structures, elevated walkways to protect the forest floor, and extensive use of local craftsmanship and indigenous materials throughout the property.
Today, Lagen Island Resort stands as one of Southeast Asia’s most compelling examples of environmentally conscious luxury hospitality, where contemporary design, Filipino cultural heritage, and ecological preservation are seamlessly woven together to create an authentic island sanctuary.
