Trần Trung Lĩnh with Pop Art

Pop Art is an art movement that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1950s, in the 20th century. This type of art is famous for taking everyday, popular subjects that resonate with the public, such as music idols, movies, product labels, advertisements, and packaging, even familiar objects in daily life, as creative themes.

Pursuing this trend for several years now, Trần Trung Lĩnh expressed his fascination with the creative inspirations that Pop Art brings. Using acrylic paint as the preferred medium, Trung Lĩnh selects the most familiar subjects to incorporate into his artworks, such as images of travelers passing through walls filled with high-end product advertisements, global celebrities, or actress Ngô Thanh Vân. Occasionally, he even includes himself in his Pop Art pieces with a satirical perspective.

Looking at Trần Trung Lĩnh's paintings, at times, the audience may think that he is joking and distorting the reality of life through the artist's mindset. But Trần Trung Lĩnh asserts, "Pop art is not a mere playfulness." It is an opportunity for him to break free from the strict seriousness, to look at life from a critical and judgmental perspective, a world of pragmatism and consumerism that is "suffocating" each individual in society.

After collecting ideas and preparing for a long time, the artist debuted dozens of pop art pieces at the exhibition, which opened on August 1st and lasted until August 5th at Saigon University, Ho Chi Minh City. "I never imagined that I could live without brushes, colors, contemplation, and ideas," he shared. For Trung Lĩnh, this exhibition is an opportunity for him to find more audiences for his pop art, which is "old to him but new to others." Recently, the artist born in 1977 was invited to exhibit in Bali, Indonesia, and his artworks received much attention from the audience and the press there.
