The Chedi Xinchang Resort is located on the banks of the HanFei River in a scenic valley within the Nineteen Peaks Scenic Area of Shaoxing, China. The resort occupies a total of five parcels—four along the river and one on a nearby hilltop—and is surrounded by tea plantations and cliffs. Its address is No. 666 Han Fei River Rd., Chengtan St., Shaoxing, Zhejiang.
The Chedi Xinchang Resort is a boutique resort located on the banks of the HanFei River, with a landscape and architectural design developed by Coopers Hill and HBA Architecture. The project emphasized environmental principles, using local materials and plants to integrate the resort seamlessly into its natural surroundings, which include tea plantations, cliffs, and the 19 Peaks of Xinchang. The development was a collaboration between the architectural and landscape design firms to create a unique fusion of luxury, local culture, and nature.
The resort buildings overlook the banks of the HanFei River and are flanked by naturally sculpted stone cliffs, a location that heavily influences the architectural philosophy. The core principle is to embrace an elegant, yet understated aesthetic, allowing nature to take center stage. This philosophy echoes architect Tadao Ando's sentiment: "I don't believe architecture has to speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise of sunlight and wind". The design intends to create a tranquil environment where the panoramic views of the valley, the famed 19 Peaks of Xinchang, and the winding river are the primary focus, facilitated by the resort's elevated position on a hill. The interior, architecture, and landscape design were handled by HBA (Hirsch Bedner Associates) and Coopers Hill, who worked to ensure the structure complements the environment rather than dominates it.
The Chedi Xinchang Resort HanFei River was designed by the architectural firm HBA Architecture (Hirsch Bedner Associates) in collaboration with Coopers Hill for the landscape design. The design approach for the resort, which opened in 2021, is rooted in an authentic and honest reflection of the local culture and the tranquil Han Fei River Valley environment. The architects at HBA, including Partner & Principal Richard L. Kuei, conceptualized the structures to seamlessly integrate with the surrounding nature, such as the riverbanks and stone cliffs.
The Chedi Xinchang Resort, nestled in a secluded valley by the winding Hanfei River, features 93 individually decorated rooms and villas, with 92 situated along the riverfront and one on a hilltop accessible by an aerial tramway. The resort, which opened in August 2021, blends modern luxury with natural surroundings and offers a range of amenities.
