IPIC Theaters, Scottsdale, Arizona

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based ID & Design Intl. created the extraordinary 48,000-sq.-ft. luxury movie theater in the trendy Scottsdale Quarter in Scottsdale, Ariz. IPIC Theaters—a premier entertainment venue—features eight digital auditoriums, SALT Ultra Lounge and TANZY, a full-service Mediterranean restaurant.

The design team's goal was to create a luxury entertainment venue that breaks away from the stereotypical movie theater environment by taking a sophisticated, hotel hospitality approach.

The grand entrance is defined by a series of wood skeletal prosceniums. The translucent layering envelops guests and creates a sense of space through an open structure. Combined with a 28-ft. ceiling and 1,000 candlelights, the voluminous space provides drama and a visual point from the exterior.

Deep hues of purples and Earth tones serve as a theatrical backdrop to the faceted dimensional wood forms, as well as the copper and silver accents of the voluminous shimmer screen ceilings above.

SALT Ultra Lounge offers a pre- and post-theater bar scene designed for the hip and stylish consumer. Circular sofas, plush leather lounges and an oval-shaped mega-bar and a 28-ft.-high backlit wine bottle display create intimate zones under a theatrical shimmer screened ceiling.

The shimmer screens suggestively delineate the lobby, lounge and restaurant by the various curvilinear forms they create and the various heights in which they hang.

The large, waved-copper ceiling combined with rich textured woods, wrought iron details, fire pits and natural weathered stone are carefully composed to create a warm, yet surreal, dining experience in the full-service restaurant.

Spliced logs create dramatic focal walls and define the intimate seating vignettes within the restaurant.

Full-height carved wood panels frame the entrances to the auditoriums. The corridors, accented with illuminated glass partitions, velvet drapery and custom fine art, offer a more sophisticated, museum-like transition to the theaters from the club-like setting of the bar lounge and restaurant.

The use of exotic woods, glass tiles and full-height mirrors combined with bold color and patterned furniture creates a chic women's lounge.
