Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is centrally located in the heart of Kyoto, Japan, situated directly across from the iconic Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The hotel occupies the historic grounds of the former main residence of the Mitsui family's executive branch, a site they maintained for over 250 years. The location offers a rare balance of centrality and tranquility, nestled in a quiet neighborhood while remaining easily connected to the rest of the city.
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto’s design theory is anchored in the traditional Japanese philosophy of Teioku-Ichinyo, which advocates for the seamless harmony between architecture and the surrounding garden. Under the creative direction of André Fu and landscape designer Shunsaku Miyagi, the property is a modern reimagining of the Mitsui family’s historic 17th-century estate. The design intentionally bridges past and present through the preservation of original artifacts, such as the restored 300-year-old Kajiimiya Gate, and the use of artisanal materials like natural cut walnut, tatami, and bespoke kimono fabrics. This "modern heritage" aesthetic is characterized by three guiding principles: authentic, mystical, and artisanal, ensuring that every space—from the sequence of light-filled corridors to the stone-carved thermal onsens—honors Kyoto's legacy while providing refined, contemporary luxury.
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, which opened in 2020 on the historic site of the Mitsui family's 18th-century residence, was designed by a world-class team of specialists. Akira Kuryu oversaw the master architectural design, while André Fu created the serene interiors for the lobby and 161 guest rooms, blending traditional Japanese tea-room aesthetics with modern materials like walnut, tatami, and custom kimono fabrics by Jotaro Saito. At the heart of the property is a 1,300-square-meter courtyard garden reimagined by landscape architect Shunsaku Miyagi, which focuses on teiokuichinyo—the harmony between architecture and nature. Guests enter through the meticulously restored 300-year-old Kajiimiya Gate, establishing a design narrative that honors Kyoto’s heritage while offering a contemporary luxury experience.
