Grims Grenka Hotel in Oslo, Norway

Situated in the heart of Oslo, First Hotel Grims Grenka’s focus on refined and modern design elements is combined with traditionally Norwegian features to create a luxurious and sensual atmosphere. Kristin Jarmund Architects paired tactile natural materials such as stone, wood and leather with glass and painted surfaces. Eye-catching flourishes include folk art, lamps made from reindeer antlers and a moss garden embedded in the reception desk.

That desk, its front backlit and made of satinated blue glass, stretches for eight metres within Grims Grenka’s vast lobby. Ancient Norwegian log-houses are the inspiration for the long, continuous walnut panelling throughout the space, but an ultramodern and three-dimensional twist is added with integrated lighting and niches for seating and bars.

Lighting is closely integrated with the interiors and furnishings, creating different atmospheres for different rooms and zones, and variation according to time of day and season. To draw out the pervasive horizontal lines and floating concept of Hotel Grims Grenka’s interiors, light sources often are cleverly hidden and placed at a low level – such as under beds, tables and shelves. The furniture designs are both Nordic and European, with custom-made writing desks, benches and night shelves in the guestrooms.

Summer Rooms are done in black and green tones with natural oak, and Winter Rooms are predictably grey, white and blue in combination with a darker, warmer oak. The colour of the ceiling is always carried down one of the walls, and the colour of the floor is taken up on the opposite wall, resulting in a cosy wrapping effect. Exposure comes with the bathrooms, which either have semi-transparent glass walls or are totally opened up and integrated into the entire room. Entrances to guestrooms are made via individual wooden bridges sheltered by wood walls and a ceiling and accented with mirrors. Talk about dramatic entrances and exits – Grims Grenka keeps both natural and exciting.
